The power meter is an instrument capable of measuring power, which is the product of force and velocity and is quantified in watts (W). In cycling, the bicycle power meter allows for the measurement of the force exerted by the cyclist at a specific moment or during a particular time period. By using a power meter, cyclists can obtain more precise information about their fitness level, enabling them to determine appropriate training loads and competition strategies. This data can be displayed on a GPS cycling computer.

Types of power meter used in cycling, depending on their placement:

  • Bottom bracket or spider power meter
  • Pedal-based power meter
  • Crank-based power meter
  • Rear wheel hub power meter

If you're interested in training with a power meter, here are a few steps to consider:

  • Perform an FTP (Functional Threshold Power) test to determine the watts a cyclist can sustain at their threshold. Typically, a 20-minute test is conducted to gather this data.
  • Calculate your lactate threshold and establish your training zones.
  • Seek guidance from a professional coach or trainer who can help create customized training plans based on your power metrics and goals.
